Why I use a Leica Q and setting for street photography

Setting for street portraiture

I have chosen to use a full frame camera for my street portraiture because I needed a camera with the capability of taking images in harsh lighting conditions. I have also been planning to print out at A2 or above, I therefore needed a camera with a full frame sensor that could handle tough conditions. The Leica Q has a fixed prime lens 28mm, my first thought was that I might need a lens I could zoom slightly because getting really close to the subject was challenging at first, as I have to get really close to the subject to create my images. The camera has actually been liberating; being able to automatically focus the camera and just shoot the street subjects, often the street subjects can be difficult at times because you do not know how the subject may react to my camera in their personal space. Knowing my camera is smaller than a DSLR, the subjects are not too aggressive or questioning compared to if I was using a DSLR I could be seen as working for the press with a big camera.

It took a while to get the setting just right, I was shooting for a while on manual focus, this became difficult when I started shooting candid portraiture because the subject would be moving too fast for good focused. The other setting on the camera would be set on Auto but I found the camera need to but on to manual. Because my image was often blurry or under exposed because the camera was making the adjustments on its own.

I put the camera on to Multi focus, I did try tracking and face recognition but found the focus was often soft. With the camera on multi focus I put the aperture on 4 so I have the subject in focus with a mid-depth of field, I found this best for keeping the subject popping from the image and to still get an atmosphere of being on the street. I have the shutter speed on 2000 or 1000 of a second to make sure I capture the subject in focus. The ISO is set to only go as high as 1600, I have chosen this so the images do not have too much noise.

Below is the sizing of the Leica Q to Nikon full frame
